Our Policy on the Use of Aversive Training Methods & Equipment
At Lucky Dog, we use force-free, dog-friendly training methods based on scientific evidence of what works best and is least stressful for effective learning in dogs. We follow and agree with the positions set by veterinary behaviorists around the world.
Negative Impacts of Force-Based Training Methods
Despite what some trainers or pet store employees may say, electronic collars are not safe or humane for your dog. Fear or pain-based training methods may have some short-term results, but they can also lead to other behavior problems such as aggression, phobias and high levels of stress in your dog. While these methods of training may suppress a behavior, the underlying cause of the behavior is not changed.
Research shows us that dogs who are trained using shock collars not only display more stress behaviors than dogs trained in other ways, but they also release more cortisol, the stress hormone, and are more likely to engage in aggressive behaviors than dogs trained in other ways. Thus, dogs who are exhibiting behaviors due to an emotional disorder based in fear, anxiety or stress are actually at greater risk of the disorder progressing if shock collars are used.
Prohibited Methods and Equipment
Aversive equipment such as shock collars (a.k.a. e-collars); pinch/prong collars; and choke collars are not permitted at anytime on the Lucky Dog property. In addition, the use of inhumane and forceful training methods, including but not limited to shocking, hitting, alpha rolling (pinning a dog down using force), and hanging from the collar are absolutely not permitted or recommended.
Consequences for Aversive Methods or Equipment at Lucky Dog
Anyone found training using any of the above mentioned equipment or using any aversive methods as described above will be asked to remove the offending equipment and/or cease any unacceptable training methods. Non-compliance will result in expulsion from the property or class and potential loss of privileges without any reimbursement of fees. By agreeing to use the facility or register for a class or event, you are agreeing to follow these rules. No exceptions will be made.
