Fundamentals for Obedience & Rally will continue where Focus Forward (Level 3 Obedience) left off. It includes refining loose leash walking and heel skills and teaches the remaining components of heeling for the Obedience / Rally ring including circles, figure-8, change of direction, serpentine, and turns.
Heeling components will be put together to provide sequencing patterns. Stay work includes proofing and exams (sit for exam/stand for exam/handler walk around room). Continued development of formal recalls and attention work are included. Off-leash heeling, go out, jumps, and some hand signals are introduced. Some Rally signs will be used.
By the end of this course, most teams will be able to perform the requisite skills included in Beginner Novice Obedience and Novice Rally.
- Heel: Circles, Figure 8s, Change of Direction, Serpentine, Turns
- Sit for Exam / Stand for Exam
- Sit Stay / Down Stay Handler Walk Around Room
- Formal Recall: Wait, Recall, Finish

- Off-Leash Heel
Successful completion of Focus Forward Moving Ahead (Level 3 Obedience) or similar class. This class is for dogs that get along well with other dogs and people (friendly or disinterested; no barking or lunging at others) as we will do some off-leash work in this class. One goal in Obedience is for the handler to have control of and focus from the dog whether on or off-leash.
We want to provide a good environment in which people and dogs can learn comfortably and feel safe. This is NOT an appropriate class for reactive dogs that bark, growl or lunge at other dogs or people. Your dog will be better served in the Reactive Dog course or in a private lesson. (Dogs that strain at their leash to get to other dogs to play are welcome in this class.)
Who is this class for? This class is for dogs around 6 months of age and older that are fine around other dogs (friendly or indifferent) and people (no aggressive lunging or barking).
Sign up your dog that is 6+ months of age and older. Class size is limited to 6 dogs so register today! This class is held indoors.
This class –or one like it– is the prerequisite to Rally. This requirement can be waived if you have done an excellent job at home on your own or you’ve taken classes elsewhere.

In addition, this may not be the right class for dogs that are dramatically afraid of most things in their world. Please call if you have any questions. There are no refunds if you cancel less than 2 days before class begins (unless there is someone to take your place).
